Santos operates at various sites in the Bowen Basin and Surat Basin for the purpose of producing coal seam gas. Some of these facilities are Arcadia, Fairview, Alton, Cabawin, Moonie Oil, Roma Gas Fields, Scotia, Wallumbilla and Spring Gully.
Contractors accessing sites controlled by Santos must only drive vehicles complying with the Santos vehicle specification. The specification is comprehensive but a summary of key points is listed below.
Visibility Standards
- Headlights permanently wired on is preferred.
- Positive ID numbers fixed to the side of the vehicle.
- High visibility flag mounted on the left side of the bull bar and be between 3.0m and 3.5m high. Santos refers to these flags as Dune Poles.
- Strobe amber light.
- High mounted rear lights
Other Safety Equipment
- Bull Bar.
- 1kg fire extinguisher to be secured to the floor in front of the passenger front seat.
- First aid kit meeting Santos specification.
- A break down kit containing safety triangles, high visibility vests, gloves, basic tools, instructions relevant to minor vehicle repairs and procedures on how to notify the journey controller of an incident.
- Cargo barriers must be installed in wagons.
- Reversing beeper.
- IVMS – In-Vehicle Monitoring System which records - driver identification, vehicle speed, distance travelled, seat belt engaged, harsh braking, 4WD engaged, vehicle ID, time of journey with data logging.
- Load restraints shall be used to ensure safe carriage.
- Speed alert.
- ROPS - Roll Over Protection Structures are required for field vehicles. ROPSs must comply with Australian Standards.
- UHF radio
- Battery isolator
- Emergency stop button.
Mechanical Requirements
- Vehicles must have completed at a minimum the manufacturer recommended maintenance schedule.
- Vehicles must be 4WD.
- Only tubeless tyres can be used at Santos sites.
- Vehicles must contain a pre-start check-list logbook where defects can be reported for further attention and repair.
- Vehicles must be cleaned on leaving site to prevent the spread of weeds.
- Cruise controls are not allowed to be used.
- Air-conditioning
- Rubber floor mats.
- Canvas seat covers.
- Snorkel
- 2 spare wheels
- All-terrain tyres
