QGC, part of the BG Group, is an explorer and producer of coal seam gas in the Surat and Bowen Basins. They have operations in many parts of Queensland and are building a natural gas pipeline linking the gas fields near Miles and Chinchilla with the terminal in Gladstone.
Contractors working at QGC sites must only drive vehicles complying with the QGC vehicle specification. The specification is comprehensive but a summary of key points is listed below.
Visibility Standards and Equipment

- Traffic control equipment – at least 3 safety triangles or flares for identifying a vehicle that is immobilised on or near a thoroughfare.

- Pre-start checklist (pre-journey checklist) - is a tick sheet used to check off components of the vehicle are working and forms a record of any defects that need rectification.

- IVMS – The In-vehicle monitoring system has many purposes. It is used for monitoring driver performance. A RAG report (red/amber/green) is generated from data recorded by the IVMS to score driver behaviour. It also is capable of locating lost or stranded vehicles and reporting a crash.
- Wheel Chocks – whilst not mandatory for light vehicles are a useful safety item for securely parking a vehicle on undulating ground.
Mechanical Requirements
- ABS – anti-lock braking system are mandatory on vehicles used at QGC sites.
- Air-bags
- Stability control
- Headlights on – daytime running lights
- Air-conditioning
- Cargo barrier – for any wagon where a load can be carried inside the vehicle.
- Load restraint – to fix a load being carried in a tray.
- Spare Tyre compatible with the tyres being used on the vehicle.
- Reverse alarm 102dB
