BMA (BHP Mitsubishi Alliance) owns and operates mines in the Bowen Basin in Queensland. Any contractors working at a BMA site who are providing their own vehicle, need to ensure the vehicle is compliant with BMA’s vehicle standard.

Vista Hire specialises in hiring mine spec vehicles – we have many years’ experience renting vehicles for use at BMA sites, and we stay current with changes to standards.

The key change that has occurred to the BMA standard in recent times is that since 1 January 2016, only 5-star ANCAP safety rated vehicles are able to access BMA sites. Mandating an ANCAP 5 safety rating also means that minimal modifications are allowed to the vehicle because they could impact the integrity of the vehicle’s safety rating.

See Mine Spec Requirements for details on the BMA Vehicle Spec.

You can hire either a mine spec ute or a mine spec wagon depending on whether you need a tray for carrying equipment.

What is ANCAP 5 Safety Rating?

ANCAP 5 Logo
ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) is an independent vehicle safety advocacy organisation that tests the safety of vehicles. A vehicle that has received an ANCAP 5 star rating means it illustrates a high level of protection and survivability for both driver and passenger. These protection mechanisms include items like:

  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • Three point seat belts for forward facing seats
  • Head protection technology (side airbags)
  • Emergency brake assist.

It makes sense that mining organisations, like BMA, support the use of vehicles that have ANCAP 5 star safety rating because it aligns with their safety ethos. At Vista Hire, we too are big supporter of ANCAP 5 safety rated vehicles, and more than 80% of our fleet is ANCAP 5 safety rated – read more in our article on why we support ANCAP 5 safety rated vehicles.

Need to Tow in your BMA Hire Vehicle?

According to BMA’s Vehicle and Mobile Equipment Standard, after-market tow bars are allowed to be fitted to a vehicle working on a BMA site. Light vehicles are only allowed to tow if they have towing capacities of greater than 2 tonne and they are 4WD.

At Vista Hire, all our 4WD vehicles have greater than 2 tonne towing capacity, and are fitted with tow bars. If you need to tow in your BMA hire vehicle, let us know so we can ensure the vehicle is correctly prepared for towing. Also please be aware that some sites may not want you to tow in a recovery situation - you should check with relevant site.

Tow ballTraining Before Driving

BMA also mandates that drivers of light vehicles are trained in the task applicable to their role. This may require the driver to undergo the ‘Operate Light Vehicle’ training course. Drivers also need to be aware of their obligations when leaving site and venturing onto a public road, including removal of indicator flags, turning off flashing lights and securing cargo.

At Vista Hire, our own staff have completed the Operate and Maintain a 4WD Vehicle (RIIVEH305D) training course, even though they all have several years of 4WDing experience. You can read more about this course and our course provider on our 4WD Training page
